Founder and Director

Nathan Berg

Nathan has been studying Djembe & Dundun music since 1999 and teaching since 2003. He lives in Berlin, is the founder and director of Beat-Etage and works as a father, musician, rhythm trainer and cultural actor.

When teaching, Nathan focuses primarily on the so-called village style of Djembe and Dundun music from the Upper Guinea region. He sees himself as a mediator between master drummers from Guinea and students from Europe in order to make the teaching and learning process holistic and optimal.

As a young man, Nathan was particularly enthusiastic about the expressive music and dance style of 90s hip hop culture and actively helped shape it in his hometown of Minden as a beat boxer, break dancer and graffiti artist. A first drum workshop in 1999 was the starting point for intensive study and a life for and with the djembe and the dunduns. This was followed by years of intensive engagement with the music through many workshops, especially with the Konaté family, and study trips to Guinea. To this day, his fascination for the combination of djembe & dundun music and all types of expressive dance remains unbroken.

As a psychologist and coach, Nathan is also very interested in group dynamics and community-building processes that drum music creates in a group and is very interested in the conditions under which people learn best. He is therefore known for his inspiring and clearly structured, didactically valuable teaching style and the imparting of in-depth knowledge about Djembe music with the involvement of the people who make the music.

What we achieve

First and foremost, playing drum rhythms together is simply great fun for most people; it activates the team and immediately puts them in a good mood.

Our method

Our workshops are based on the idea of making music together as a metaphor for teamwork.

Using West African drums such as djembes and balafons, participants learn not only rhythms, but also listening, reacting and synchronizing – essential skills for successful collaboration.

A mixture of structure and improvisation creates a creative, interactive process that brings each team together.

The effect

Our customers report measurable improvements in the collaboration and motivation of their teams. Drumming together:

  • improves communication by having team members actively listen to and respond to each other,

  • trust is strengthened because each individual contributes to the overall result,

  • Team spirit is promoted by creating a harmonious unity from individual sounds.

These positive effects last beyond the workshop and have a long-term impact on the corporate culture.

Toumany Fofana

Toumany Fofana is a musician from Guinea. A musician who is at home wherever the melody is right. Born in Faranah, he experienced the traditional festivals of his town with his father, a singer and guitarist, from an early age and learned to love music. His first instrument was the djembe. In addition to the djembe and dundun, Toumany also plays the balafon and drums.

In Conakry, Toumany has accompanied numerous ceremonies as a drummer or singer for a long time and is a member of the Ballet Sembe Fonike. He has thus become familiar with the traditional game of the villages of Upper Guinea, as well as the modern game in the capital, and incorporates this wealth of knowledge into his teaching in Berlin. Toumany has lived in Berlin since 2017, accompanies dance courses, sings in band projects and teaches how to play djembes and dunduns. He is particularly popular due to his energetic and fresh teaching style.
